Be always coming home

Please bring strange things.
Please come bringing new things.
Let very old things come into your hands.
Let what you do not know come into your eyes.
Let desert sand harden your feet.
Let the arch of your feet be the mountains.
Let the paths of your fingertips be your maps
And the ways you go be the lines of your palms.
Ursula K. Leguin

for tens of years we have been kicking summer off with an annual family trip to palm springs. it's the place where the whole family - grandparents, parents, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews come to reunite. warm days and late nights are spent talking, carousing, and catching up. luckily, a lot stays the same. luckily, a lot is always changing. these moments become deep grooves in life. we grew up here, our kids are doing the same.

please bring strange things, new things. let the very old things come into your hands.

so many memories are made during the freedom of summer. are there places or traditions you return to year after year?

be always coming home. xx

  1. I spent my summers as a kid on Lake Ontario at my family's cottages. My dad had done the same when he was young. And now I'm bringing my own kids there every year. It's a place full of family history, stories, love, long conversations, music, bonfires, and magic. I'm beyond grateful that my family still has it and that so many of my extended family members are still drawn to it.

    1. sounds like a dream, Mary. I love traveling and exploring new places, but there is something so grounding and anchoring about those well tread places in our lives.

  2. i don't have a family tradition we return to every summer, but this summer we are returning to visit san diego, after moving away last year. i'm beyond excited to visit all the places we love so dearly, and i hope it will keep happy memories of our time there alive in my kids. i love your line "become deep grooves in life"...i definitely feel like san diego left a groove and i can't wait to return.
