a new perspective

change: taking it all in and giving it back out again, differently.

everything in my home is constantly in rotation. each week i rotate the puzzles, books and games that are set out for the girls. i shift around artwork, move plants, re-arrange stacks of books, bring in garden clippings, and often swap out rugs.

why?

i saw a quote on a domaine that may explain it.

everyone wants a moment in their house that's breathtaking. they want that in-take of breath- that WHAT IS THAT. it's anything that's peculiar but beautiful.

i crave the unexpected. i am always looking to see something differently. moving things around helps me see things anew. things become interesting again. i look, i ponder, i engage. it makes me appreciate my home and my things in a different way.

how about you, how often to you move things around? do you like a shift in perspective?

hope you have a wonderful weekend. xx

  1. Before marriage and kids, I loved to move. I craved change that much! It made me grow and see things so differently. With every new place I had a new perspective that brought a little more depth into my life. Now I don't crave that kind of change (even though i LOVE to travel for that same reason) but I do love moving things around for a new perspective and love seeing the girls reaction to it. I also like them to see that things can change and when you change things around it can become more beautiful or you can always go back to how it was. Funny how the girls in this house love that and the hubby, well, takes him a while to warm up to it.

    1. I love travel for that reason too! I agree about watching the girls reaction to change in the house. It's always interesting to see how long it takes for them to notice that something's different.

  2. i love and welcome a shift in perspective. i too often change things around. i used to move furniture around more often than i do now but i move my paintings and decorative nicknacks often. visually i need it. i crave the visual change constantly.

    1. Claudia, thank you so much! I am glad to hear that there are others like me who crave the visual change just as much. Glad you stopped by :)

  3. Ohh I couldn't agree more Karina, I love moving things around, moving house, going away, coming back, being surprised and feeling like there is something new and fresh somewhere in my house. I usually do a rotation of paintings on the walls, although I haven't in while.... Now where did I leave the step ladder?

    1. Hi Ruby. I've been following your work through the 52 project. Your paintings are beautiful. I love hearing a fellow painter's perspective on changing things around. You said it so perfectly, coming back and feeling that feeling of newness and surprise. I love that. xxx

  4. I do a bit of this. I wish I had the energy to do more. I mostly happy if it (my space) feels clean and fresh.

    1. Funny you say this Desi, my house is rearranged, but quite dirty. I have been trying to clean it for 5 days now and can't quite bring myself to do it. But I hear you. I have many of those weeks. Sometimes I think rearranging is like a sort of therapy. It clears my head even more than my space. :)

  5. every week on the day that I clean my house I move art and accessories and plants around and even though it's cheesy I call it my "love my house day." it makes the cleaning better and it's so great to wake up the next day to all the changes. btw...just found your blog and i read all your posts for months back...my new favorite!

    1. Welcome Emily and thanks!! I tend to rearrange as I clean too. Unfortunately, I get distracted with arranging and lose interest in cleaning. It happens often and then takes me days to clean, a big downside. But I really do crave the newness and inspiration that a subtle shift makes.

  6. I find that I do this for the boys all the time, rearranging their playroom, their toys and games and books. It is obvious how much it helps them rediscover things and look at them a different way. I do it less for me. I think that's because I'm still in the process of putting my house together. Once I do, I expect I'll be shifting things around every now and then. Because I agree. A change of pace and a different view is so nice.

    1. You said it right Mary, it really does help kids rediscover things and it helps me too. Also, every time I am itching for something new I just move things, it saves a lot of money too! :)

  7. I've been working on my house a lot recently, and one thing I'm really focusing on is making the space we have best fit our needs. That is not always the same thing as how I think it "should" be used, but more a reflection of how we actually use it, and what spaces I notice we don't use as much as we could if they were rearranged in a new way. Since it doesn't seem like we'll move any time soon, I want to make it as useful and beautiful as I can, so that I'm happy to stay a while longer.
